The year was 1992. Like the four women who made up the soulful quartet En Vogue, I too was discovering my inner funky diva. Which brings me to the funk-rock commentary occupying today’s blurb, “Free Your Mind.”

With quick-witted critiques and a hot beat, this smash tore down racial and societal prejudices and had enough juice leftover to get the party started. Dawn, Maxine, Terry, and Cindy were brazen and in your face but having spent four months in Billboard’s Top 40 that year, we were all compelled to take notice and chew on the charge laid at our feet. Plus you can never go wrong with a thumping mid-song catwalk breakdown.
