The year was 1996. A year so rich in musical capability, even the bizarrest of one-hit wonders was still noteworthy.
Leading that off-center charge, San Antonio’s odd-rock ensemble Butthole Surfers released “Pepper,” a psychedelic foray into living on the edge. Told through a mix of spoken and sung verse, lead singer Gibby Haynes details the sordid lives of ten souls spiraling out of control in the great Texas abyss, while a simple and at times trippy riff underscores the eccentricity.
Then they went and coupled that with an even weirder, Eric Estrada led video to drive home the quirk factor. As a twelve year old I vividly remember not knowing what the fuck was going on here. As a thirty year old I’m not sure I have any better grasp:
