I was never very good at basic math but I’m pretty sure Coldplay + Beyoncé x late-night club antics = your new favorite jam aka “Hymn For The Weekend.”
Premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show earlier in the week, the latest A Head Full Of Dreams preview finds the two world-class acts joining forces for a mellifluous party anthem.
Coldplay’s Guy Berryman revealed to Ms. Mac the cut was originally conceived as a device for Chris Martin to belt “drinks on me” over and over but the band thought better of it and invited Queen B to lay down her vocals instead [apparently in a little over five minutes]. The collaboration isn’t perfect; Beyonce is relegated to glorified backup singer. But anytime you can mix that rarefied range into a multifaceted arrangement from Coldplay you’re not too far off the mark.
The end result is the symphonic and sublime offering below. And don’t forget A Head Full Of Dreams is out this Friday [Dec. 4] via Parlophone Records.
