6. “Where Are Γ Now” – Jack Γ ft. Justin Bieber
5. “How Deep Is Your Love” – Calvin Harris & Disciples
Deep house made deep strides in mainstream radio this year thanks in
large part to the successes mainstream producers had already brought to
the table. Calvin Harris, a producer’s producer, outdid his 2014 self when
he teamed up with London trio Disciples and unleashed the club-monster
“How Deep Is Your Love.” Backing off his more accessible progressive
structure, the Scottish superstar brought down the bpm and played up
the techier aspects of Disciples’ beatmaking. The end result is a hypnotic
speaker-buster I still can’t shake.
4.“Those Girls” – Karen Harding
Karen Harding, making herself at home in Digital High’s Top 10 once
again, delivered another infectious ear-pleaser earlier this year with
“Those Girls.” The GRADES produced stunner bounces along at a
tempered pace until Harding explodes with a few hair-raising high notes in
the final act. Here’s to hoping she makes it three-for-three in 2016.
3. “Pay My Rent” – DNCE
This slice of genuine fun from DNCE came outta nowhere in late October
and I haven’t been able to quit listening since. Still racking up the heavy
rotation spins, “Pay My Rent” has turned into 2015’s quintessential party
anthem with its rollicking arrangement and catchy as fuuuuck hook.
Honestly its become the de-facto theme song to any number of late night
shenanigans my group of friends and I have found ourselves in.
2. “Hold My Hand” – Jess Glynne
I’m hard pressed to find someone who had a more perfect 2015 than
London’s Jess Glynne. Riding high the accolades poured on her for
2014’s “Rather Be” feature, the fiery vocalist took the pop world by storm
this passed summer with the release of her own debut album I Cry When
I Laugh. Nary a miss among the tracklist, I give a nod to third single
“Hold My Hand” as favorite. This soulful disco-pop cut is an unending
ride of musical elation as horns and piano build a satisfying bed for
Glynne’s full-bodied range; there isn’t a misplaced note to be found.
1. “King” – Years & Years
Solidifying themselves as my new favorite act this year, Years & Years
check in at #1 with the fittingly titled “King.” An electro-pop stroke of near
genius, this three and half minute mover dazzles with its layers of
syncopated rhythms and towering synth composition. But it’s lead singer
Olly Alexander who takes center stage on the track. His undeniable
emotion elevates the entirety to a profound listening experience; one that
still resonates months on. I can’t praise this one enough, so I’ll let it speak
for itself…
