JAY-Z’s 13th studio album 4:44 has been well-received by both critics and fans alike. For good reason too; the long player touches on personal demons, family strife, and societal debate. All with the flair for grandeur you’d expect a Hova project to come with.
Standout for me among the 10-track offering is the 2017 Academy Award referencing “Moonlight.” Highlighted by an inspired Fugees sample, the cut rehashes the unforgettable Oscar moment when La La Land was announced as the year’s Best Picture winner before it was revealed Moonlight was the rightful honoree.
The Brooklyn emcee concedes over a crushing bassline “even when we win, we gonna lose,” detailing the struggles overshadowing black America even in the glow of accomplishment. A poignant piece, stream below then check out the rest of the album over on TIDAL.
