With a song title as evocative as Soul System’s alt-hop jam “White Niggas” I had an internal deliberation on how to write this post or just avoid it altogether. The n-word, in any variation, is a discordant topic that a white guy like myself usually shouldn’t touch. Using asterisks registered at first but it’s not my prerogative to abridge an artist’s intention. Moreover, when a cut is as notable as the X Factor Italy champs’ latest I feel it would be a disservice not to spread support for the original work.
The new single is the lead off of sophomore album Back To The Future and as the five-piece explain, it is designed to be a celebration of multiculturalism:
The expression ‘White niggas’ encloses our mindset: we are all equal and united by music. It is our multicultural integration message. Diversity is a resource, not a limit.
That sentiment coupled with an infectious bounce and endearing visual treatment only serve to bolster a sonic movement the world sorely needs right now. Ethnicity be damned, you can’t help but smile after a listen. Judge for yourself with a stream below!
