After what can only be described as a curiously cybernated social media campaign, Years & Years newest hit is finally here. Premiered tonight as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World, “Sanctify” is just as other-wordly as you’d expect. Stopping by the BBC Radio 1 studios, Olly shared the futuristic pop delight to rave reviews.
Inspired by the frontman’s dubious dealings with heterosexual men exploring their sexualities, the cut makes bold use of rhythmic bass that coalesces around a tribal cadence; think “Slave 4 U” with a contemporary twist. That next-level energy mixed up with a heavy dose of raw lyricism makes for a singular sonic moment Y&Y have become known for.
It’s hard to believe it has been three years since debut album Communion was released, but fear not, a sophomore album is slated for this summer. Until then, get to streaming/downloading another early favorite of 2018 below:
