Ever the darlings of charming ambiguity, The 1975 returned to their social media platforms at the stroke of midnight last night with a simple Hello, which also happened to coincide with the launch of a cryptic countdown on their official website.

With June 1 as the zero hour, speculation as to what it all means is being bandied about in cyberspace, but my curiosities are being raised by the beautiful orchestral piece that accompanies the ticking clock. Titled “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships,” delicate strings are paired with fluttery woodwinds all the while simple piano bars envelop the background. Also spliced together are vignettes of tech commercials, robots, Ed Sheeran, and more.
