Longtime readers know Digital High is big on showing love to local D.C. bands as much as possible. Today’s feature is a fun one as local post-dance-punkers Light Beams let loose their latest listen “Friendly.”
Second single from their Wild Life project [releasing Nov. 3], the ESG-inspired, block-rock tune took shape after a real-life encounter between lead vocalist Justin Wm. Moyer and a protest demonstrator outside the Supreme Court. He explains the meaning behind the title:
I had taken some photos of the scene and the protester started challenging me β physically challenging me β about my photos. This person was getting very angry, and I was getting very angry. But I realized that the situation could be defused easily by, well, keeping things friendly…This song is about that β and any situation where emotions threaten to get too big for the people experiencing them.
The accompanying visuals are a whirlwind exploration of that altercation, full of fresh performance takes and D.C. scenics. This is the center of American government, y’all. If you aren’t mixing a little politics in with your melody, are you even doing?
