Corinne Bailey Rae – SilverCane

For her first taste of new music following last year’s Black Rainbows release, Corinne Bailey Rae returns with a poignant piece, “SilverCane.”

This warped, electro-R&B cut channels a minimalistic aesthetic while telling the story of a major moment in Black history; 1921’s thriving Greenwood, Oklahmoma aka “Black Wall Street” before a violent destruction by White supremacists. As the history-conscious creative puts it:

This song celebrates Greenwood before that; the families, the freedom, the confidence, the feeling of having created a place away from hatred and fear. There is an ominous feeling in the background as we, the listener, know what is coming.

The power of music is in full effect as listeners take in a lasting lesson and consequential listen.
