Cola Boyy, known as the “disabled disco innovator,” sadly passed on a year ago March. To celebrate the cherished creative his family and label are announcing the relase of his sophomore studio project Quit to Play Chess [out May 23] with lead single “Babylon.”
Mr. Boyy, pulling on threads he’s known for, embraces an off-kilter spirit as he arranges his rhythmn and groove. An unconventional bounce buoyed by the black-and-whites engrosses eager ears before the piano fades into this melodic mix of funk and classic rock elements. But it’s the almost peculiar verse and hook that sticks with long after the listen is through.
Even in death, the music endures.
