Japan’s Fujii Kaze is looking to make waves in international waters as he begins to bring his brand of pop panache to the mainstream scene. The intrepid soloist is busying himself with the rollout of his Prema project [out Sept. 5] with releases like bilingual bop “Hachikō.”
A primarily English cut with Japanese accoutrement, this culture connector amplifies the power of loyalty as it keys in on the famed dog who would wait for his deceased owner at the Shibuya station every day for 10 years.
The cut shimmers as neon keys and a percussive stomp form an undying disco-dance energy. But the real beauty is in Kaze’s melodic vocal runs, peppered throughout but most noticeably in the groove-heavy outro. There’s something about the Japanglish that just works.
