The new year’s first taste of truly stirring tunage has arrived in the form of Timmy Skelly’s newly minted, eight track EP Meet Me In Nowhere Land.
This collection of no-skips Americana follows in the wake of breakout EP Dive Bar Sermon and its headliner “Come On Diana,” but stands out as a triumph all its own as this Illinois creative seems like he’s the only one out there making real music. Rich melodies born through strums of the guitar and plucks of the black-and-whites come to characterize his brand of “Midwest Y’allternative,” self-described, and are the sonic life-blood of this short player. But they aren’t the only draw.
Kicking off with the foot-stomping opener “Nowhere Land” and concluding with the soulful hymn “Gospel #7,” his nostalgia-tinged lyricism is both pragmatic and poignant. He touches on his appproach:
I am a hopeless romantic. I love the past. I love tossing a golden filter on my youth and soaking up the simpler times. I don’t miss them, but I appreciate them.
That gratitude is the focal point of the record and a critical component to what makes this listen so lasting.
