The year was 2002. The five fellas of NSYNC were at the peak of their meteoric rise to stardom. This celebrity would be too much to contain so like all good things it had to come to an end. “Girlfriend” would be the last single the boys ever released, but what a way to go out.
Enlisting The Neptunes for the beat and St. Louis’ own Nelly for a couple verses, this cut was as close to hip-hop as any manufactured boy band could ever hope for. It finds the boys pining over a girl, surprise surprise, but it’s the addition of the St. Lunatic that keeps it fresh. His first verse sets a blistering pace that’s offset nicely by the laid back harmonies of Justin and crew. It’s the second verse though that stands out after all these years. Rattling off the best features of some of the game’s hottest female acts, Nelly lights it up name checking the likes of Beyonce and Alicia Keys. I’m pretty sure it’s the first rap I ever learned word for word. I don’t know why but there’s just something vitalizing about shouting “hips off Trina, the lips off Eve” for me.
