The year was probably early 2000’s. Preppy white boys everywhere were discovering Apple’s GarageBand for the first time, leading to a new and exciting era of Waspy, off-brand rap parody.
At the forefront of this movement, Rappy McRapperson released a modern day magnum opus with “I’m A Gangster.” It’s real, it’s gritty, it’s…pretty fucking funny. With the lyrical prowess of a much more seasoned MC, the young tenderfoot drops truth bombs left and right. Flowing with conviction over an understated bassline, he lays down gem’s like “I dropped outta school at the age of 3. Why? Cause all the teachers tried to player hate on me” and the hard hitting “yo! my gangster flow. yo! yo yo yo!” It’s that ingenious wordplay that really brings this one home. And what’s a great rap song without unnecessary shout outs to other well-known gangsters? In this case, the thug who brought you “Thong Song,” Sisqo gets the honor. Name dropping like that takes a set of carbyne balls!
So for all the ruffians out there looking to reminisce on their illicit exploits of a time gone by, just press play:
