I always feel a slight sense of trepidation when a young act takes on songs released when they were toddlers. You never know if they really get the tone or mood of a given piece, or if their management just throws something catchy at them to make a few extra bucks. Thankfully that’s not the case with 26 year old, ‘not too cool to dance’ Eden xo, who has put together a fine mashup of two pop pillars in her latest offering, Edenswap’s alt-rock haunter “Torn” [made famous by Natalie Imbruglia] and the indelible “Don’t Stop Believin'” from Journey [actually recorded a near decade before the songstress’ birth].
A combination of late 90’s sugary sweetness and early 80’s glam-synth, “Torn (Don’t Stop Believin’)” is a pleasure fulfilling exercise in delivering the best of both worlds. The Los Angeles hitmaker effortlessly captures the fittingly unique crux of each classic with her contemporary and nuanced vocal update. It’s a welcomed breath of throwback air in an otherwise stale musical climate. Enjoy:
