If you’ve never heard of Selah Sue [like me], you’ve been missing out. Born Sanne Greet A. Putseys, the Belgian bellower brings a unique and unconventional finesse to music’s table. Part Tove Lo, part FKA twigs, all Selah, she has been a household name in Europe for some time but is just now seeing that success translate abroad with the release of her second studio album Reason, aided in part to the Childish Gambino assisted, electro-R&B cut “Together.”
But it’s a rework of the track that’s actually got me all agog. Keeping with our European theme, the French DJ/producer Marlin grabs hold of the halcyon original and morphs it into a bouncy speaker buster. Working the pads off the top for a change of pace, the annoyingly young beatflipper builds in futurific synths and bass-heavy grooves that only serve to enhance Selah’s melodic verses and Childish’s energized flow. This is a rotation must add!
