dé·jà vu
/dāZHä ˈvo͞o/
noun
a feeling of having already experienced the present situation
Funny, because that’s the exact sensation I felt after listening to Post Malone and Justin Bieber’s new cut of the same name, “Deja Vu.” Even the least discerning ears out there can tell the appropriately titled single sounds suspiciously similar to one of 2015’s biggest hits, “Hotline Bling.”
But easy jokes aside, the track capitalizes on the familiar then introduces an even sleeker take on the R&B smoothness. The two, on Biebs’ Purpose World Tour together, connect over a simple groove to trade melodic verse and hook producing a type of aural chemistry that’s wholly original.
