I thought I was a pretty decent Jess Glynne fanboy. Her debut I Cry When I Laugh is still seeing rotation spins and I made sure I was front row and center when she came through the District earlier this year. But here I am, getting lost in the monotony of my 9-5, when I chance upon an unrecognizable track from beat-crafter DJ Cassidy that so happened to have the rarefied songstress front and center. Such an amateur.
“Kill The Lights,” a nu-disco groover from HBO’s 70’s set series Vinyl, also features the likes of silky soloist Alex Newell and iconic guitarist Nile Rodgers making for one star-studded party. The four creative forces work in harmonic unison here, each adding a unique touch to the final genre-blending and decade-spanning composition. Between this and Netflix’s The Get Down, disco is alive and very well.
