There’s nothing smoother than two acts coming together for a quick jam session over a classic R&B groover, so its no surprise Close Counters latest collaboration is a velvety pleasure. The Aussie beat-flipping duo have joined with UK soloist James Berkeley for “Just Friends,” an organically clever cover of the Musiq Soulchild original.
This new take, recorded live in Berkeley’s Brighton abode, doesn’t stray too far from the melodic path laid out before it but like any notable re-recording it evolves with a tone wholly unique. The UK wordsmith’s vocals echo Soulchild’s silky verses but begin to loom large when buoyed by the pronounced percussive bounce and subtle electronic interpretations. It’s slick and oh so tight; a worthy companion piece for contemporary ears.
