The year was 1994. Old school, to a ten year old me, meant my underpaid and under-appreciated thirty-something Kindergarten teacher. Weird how some things never change. But that’s neither her nor there when talking about today’s throwback, the ‘Old Skool Radio Version’ of SWV’s funked-up “Anything.”
Tailor-made for a weekend cookout or get down at the roller rink, this nostalgia-inducer is easily one of the Sisters With Voices’ most memorable cuts. Off of their aptly titled EP The Remixes, the flip relies heavily on samples of eras past, mainly the brass and bounce of Freedom’s soul-disco piece “Get Up And Dance.” When compared to the slow burn of the original there’s no denying the energy and harmony the trio bring to the revamp.
And after introducing a healthy dose of Wu-Tang Clan verses into the mix, this one is over the top special. Choice features from Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man and U-God and another sample [their classic C.R.E.A.M.] solidify ‘Anything’ as an old skool turn up not to be missed.
