Brass is having itself a moment in 2017. Beatsmiths like the appropriately named Brasstracks have risen to mainstream popularity this year on the heels of a labrosone resurgence, their signature sound. Tapping in to that wave are another horn heavy act, a new ensemble specializing in protest covers with a jazzed-twist, Brass Against The Machine.
Taking their name from one of the most well-known revolution-rousers, Rage Against The Machine, the NYC nine-piece has shared their spin on one of the band’s most iconic counterculture anthems, “Killing In The Name.” A musical middle finger to today’s auhtoritarian machine, this live rendition bristles with gritty instrumentation and vocal urgency; Sophia Urista, entrusted with frontwoman duties, delivers the brazen lyrics through her own portentous lens, buoyed by an equally consequential coalescence of sound.
A hot take if there ever was one, stream the brassed-out piece below and grab a free download. As a bonus, check out their dope RATM / Beyonce mashup too.
