Brian Robert Jones – No Strings Attached [Album Review]

It’s been a little over twenty years since NSYNC released what is arguably the greatest boy band album of all time, No Strings Attached, so there’s been ample opportunity for covers and flips alike.

But no one has made that attempt until now, when Human Natural’s own Brian Robert Jones re-imagined the 2000’s pop-treat into a contemporary delight. The multi-instrumental music-maker’s modernization is complete with updated synthwork, vocoder stylings, and a little help from current voices like Ren Farren, Jesse Gold, and his Human Natural bandmate Hannah Winkler.

Standouts include solo efforts of the standard-bearer “Bye Bye Bye” and great-groove “I’ll Be Good For You” as well as collaborative takes on “It’s Gonna Be Me” and title track “No Strings Attached,” but it’s the impassioned undertaking of album-ender “I Thought She Knew,” featuring an assist from singer-songwriter Lou Roy, that puts this one over the top.

From top to bottom, the NSYNC boys should be proud of what Mr. Jones has done here.
