Digital High’s Top 20 of 2023 [Part 1]

2023 has come and gone so you know what time it is; that time of the year where we look back on the previous 365’s highs and lows. Oh, and Digital High’s Top 20 Tunes of 2023. So without further ado I present to you this year’s mix of eclectic achievement.

20. “Break”Holiday87 ft. Minke
Ben Ruttner, one half of the famed duo The Knocks, has not-so-quietly been making another name for himself with his solo, Holiday87 project for a few years now. But DH finally took notice this year when he dropped the exceedingly charming collaboration “Break” with Minke. It’s a fine-tuned, piano-led dance-pop bop from someone who knows his way around a hit and a spirited kickoff to this year-ender.

19. “I’m Not Here To Make Friends”Sam Smith ft. Calvin Harris & Jessie Reyez
Don’t be scared if you like this next one because Sam, Calvin, and Jessie came correct with a top-notch tune this year. Unapologetically bold, this Gloria standout serves confidence, audacity, and a little scandal, all in the name of good groove.

18. “Waffle House”Jonas Brothers
The Jonas Brothers were back in a big way after they dropped The Album back in May. This soundtrack to a good time gave listeners a plethora of pure pop options, but this first single looms large for its agreeable tempo and ingratiating melody.

17. “Arizona”Dempsey Bolton
The American Southwest never sounded as significant as it does on Dempsey Bolton’s sendup of The Copper State. Taken from the young soloist’s sophomore studio album, his alt-pop reflection on days gone by is upbeat, playful, and unique. But this ish is really just friggin’ fun.

16. “Pixelated”Juliana Madrid
This Summer saw some opportunities, but none so special as Juliana Madrid’s angst-minded rumination. A switch in styles for the Dallas creative birthed this sonic catharsis, noticed especially in the staccato notes of each chorus, and caught the ear of this eager listener. “Here for it” is an understatement.
