The year was 1990. I was a fresh faced Kindergarten graduate ready to make my way in to the bustling world of Montgomery County Maryland’s public elementary schools. I felt great. No, I felt gooood.
I wish I could say Tony! Toni! Toné! was my inspiration, but to be honest I probably wasn’t introduced to the Oakland trio until a decade later. My first taste was arguably one of their biggest hits, the up-tempo R&B/new jack swing hybrid “Feels Good.” The funky bass laid down on the track is what hooks you, but it’s Raphael Saadiq’s unmatched vocals that make this such a classic of the genre. There’s a reason dude has been in the game for damn near thirty years.
