It’s 2014, why haven’t we discovered a cure for the common cold yet? Not only do I need some sweet relief but I’m sure my weary cubefarm compatriots wouldn’t mind a break from the coughing, sneezing, and all around dying noises. If only the quick fix could come in musical form, like say the latest from Kendrick Lamar.
Following up on the massive success that was 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d. City, the Compton MC preps his sophomore album release with “i”, a quick hitting colossus of a cut. Over a Rahki crafted sample of the Isley Brother’s soul-funk classic “That Lady”, Kendrick ebbs and flows in his usual expeditious pace, only letting up to deliver the cocksure hook of “I love myself”. And while swaggadocio is nothing new in hip-hop, it’s welcomed here as it jibes with the overall message of deeper confidence in one’s self.
Look for I later this year.
