Big Boi is prepping the release of his latest solo effort with the launch of the Adam Levine assisted lead single “Mic Jack.” Boomiverse will hit retailers this June and if this first taste is any implication, it looks like we’re in store for another sonic masterclass.
The track bumps from the start with well-oiled drum machine kicks and sprawling use of synth from eras bygone before the Atlanta rapper drops a few baritone verses and the Maroon 5 frontman adds his always appreciated vocal accouterments. It’s an overall polished production but that’s unsurprising; what really stands out is the clear progression towards an agreeable Top 40 sound rather than the go-hard takes you’re used to.
Fans fear not though, Big Boi dropped a companion cut “Kill Jill” that should satisfy those looking for the grit they’re familiar with. In any case, Boomiverse should be something special when its finally received this Summer.
