R&B as a genre may have peaked in the early 90s, Digital High will fight you on this, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t artists out there today crafting comparable compliments. Take for instance Amber Mark, who throws it back to the time-honored sound on her latest, a nuanced NYC anthem “Put You On.”
Inspired by the rise of Cardi B, the DRAM assisted cut is a testament to “a woman who made it out of the hood in New York and into the top of success” the soulful soloist explains in a release. Behind this lyrical celebration of gain is a new jack bounce that bumps the track along and a funky bassline keeping check. But Mark and her breathless vocal take are the single’s real success story as she ascends to the heights of the genre’s past greats with a contemporary cool all her own.
