If I didn’t know any better I’d say the lead singer of Parolophone Record’s newest signee Los Unidades sounds suspiciously like that guy who front’s Coldplay.
Oh, wait. I do. That is Chris Martin and fellas assuming a pseudonym for the release of the Global Citizen EP last month, a collection that mirrors the annual music festival’s resilience to end global poverty. Features on the four track short player include Pharrell Williams and David Guetta, but it’s a South African soloist’s inclusion earning a review today.
“Timbuktu,” a truly international affair, finds Cassper Nyovest opening the song so smoothly in his native Xhosa before Martin joins in to harmonize over bassed-out synths and funky-pop licks for the chorus. Add in a fresh flow from British rhyme-spitter Stormzy and a splash of vocal flourishes from Aussie songstress Jess Kent throughout and you’ve got a truly special sound.
