It started with the internet clamoring for a one-off cover of the 80’s cult classic “Africa” by Toto. It ended with nine more hot takes on some of music’s best throughout the years. It of course being the surprise release of The Teal Album, Weezer’s twelfth full length.
Inspired by the swell of support for the Toto tune, the band branched out to take on hits by Tears For Fears, Michael Jackson, and the subject of today’s write-up, TLC. “No Scrubs” is arguably one of 90’s music’s most lasting achievements, so to successfully maneuver a new versioning is no easy feat. But the elder statesmen of the scene are one of 90’s music’s most lasting acts.
The contemporary update steers the original R&B mix towards their traditional alt-pop sound as a driving percussive element keeps pace and electrifying riffs underscore the full-bodied hook. A decidedly Weezer re-imagining, it sounds like the cut’s originators approve. Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas let Twitter know she fully supported their effort and even suggested they team up to perform it live.
I think it’s safe to say we would fully support that effort too. Stream below, grab a copy of The Teal Album courtesy of Crush Music / Atlantic Recording Corporation, and spread that social love:
